Organotin Compound Testing
1. Introduction to Organotin Compounds
Organotin compounds are organometallic compounds formed by the direct bonding of tin and carbon elements. They can be broadly classified into two categories: alkyltin compounds and aromatic compounds, including tributyltin (TBT), dibutyltin (DBT), triphenyltin (TPhT), trisubstituted organotin compounds such as tributyltin (TBT) and triphenyltin (TPhT), and dioctyltin (DOT).
2. Main Uses of Organotin Compounds
They are used as catalysts, stabilizers, agricultural pesticides, fungicides, as well as coatings and mildew inhibitors for daily-use products. In the natural environment, organotin compounds react and decompose rapidly. Organotin compounds are commonly found in sealants, adhesives, catalysts, paints, coatings, PVC, outdoor fabrics, stabilizers, outdoor rainwater pipes, gutters, appliances, textiles in contact with the skin, gloves, shoe components in contact with the skin, wall and roof coverings, and children's care products.
3. Hazards of Organotin Compounds
This substance can cause feminization in female mollusks and reproductive toxicity in mammalian cells. It is toxic and harmful to the human nervous system, bile ducts, liver, skin, and endocrine system.
4. Why Test Products for Organotin Compounds?
The EU Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH), Annex XVII, stipulates the prohibition of organotin compounds. This regulation is directly applicable to all EU member states. Organotin compounds must not be used as biocides in coatings. Furthermore, they must not be placed on the market or used as antifouling substances in: all vessels used in marine, coastal, estuarine, and inland waterways and lakes; cages, buoys, nets, and any other equipment or devices used for fish or shellfish farming; and any equipment or devices that are fully or partially submerged.
China's GB/T 18885 "Technical Requirements for Ecological Textiles" and GB/T 35611 "Green Product Evaluation—Textile Products" both impose relevant restrictions on the content of organotin compounds in textiles.
5. Testing Items
Qualitative and quantitative testing, toxicological experiments, and other testing items are conducted for various organotin compounds, including dibutyltin chloride, monobutyltin chloride, triethyltin chloride, triphenyltin chloride, tributyltin chloride, tripropyltin chloride, diphenyltin chloride, tetrabutyltin, dioctyltin chloride, and monophenyltin chloride.
